What felt like the longest January every has officially ended! (FIVE January Mondays to kick of 2018, come on!) On Friday, the groundhog predicted 6 more weeks of winter, which means 6 more weeks of chilly temps, dry indoor air and, unfortunately, colds and flus!
This year's bugs seem particularly nasty, as we're seeing lots of sore throats and lingering coughs in the office.
Try out one of my favourite DIY cough syrups and immune boosters to keep your family healthy these final few weeks. Disclaimer: These recipes are made with honey so not advised for those under 1 year old.
Daily Immune Paste
¼ tsp turmeric root or powder
1 tsp grated ginger or ginger juice
½ tsp honey
pinch of black pepper
Combine all ingredients & enjoy daily throughout cold and flu season.
This one sounds a bit "zippy" but the honey really cuts the spiciness! The honey is a powerful antimicrobial, while pepper, ginger and turmeric kick on the immune system and are potent anti-inflammatories to keep your system prepared for whatever germs come your way!
Simple Cough Syrup
1 yellow onion, sliced evenly
3 cloves garlic, chopped
1 cup of honey
In a jar with a tight fitting lid, place 1 layer each of onion and garlic. and cover with honey. Repeat until you’ve filled the entire jar. Cover tightly for 12 hours to allow honey, garlic and onion combine to make a powerhouse of antimicrobials! Use 1 spoonful as needed to soothe cough and sore throat.
